Based extremely loosely on the Stephen Vincent Benet story Sobbin' Women,' Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is one of the best MGM musicals of the 1950s. Most of the story takes place on an Oregon ranch, maintained by Adam Pontabee (Howard Keel) and his six brothers, played by Jeff Richards, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall, Mark Platt, Matt Mattox, and Jacques d'Amboise (it is no coincidence that five of those six boys are played by professional dancers). When Adam brings home his new bride Milly (Jane Powell), she is appalled at the brothers' slovenliness and sets about turning these unwashed louts into immaculate gentlemen.
During the boisterous barn-raising scene, the brothers get into a scuffle with a group of townsmen over the affection of six comely lasses: Virginia Gibson, Julie Newmeyer (later Newmar), Ruth Kilmonis (later Ruth Lee), Nancy Kilgas, Betty Carr, and Norma Doggett (yep, most of the girls are dancers, too). Yearning to become husbands like their big brother, they ask Adam for advice. Alas, he has been reading a book about the abduction of the Sabine Women (or, as he puts it, the Sobbin' Women); and, in order to claim their gals, Adam explains, the boys must kidnap them-which they do, after blocking off all avenues of escape.
Vowing to remain on their best behavior, the boys make no untoward advances towards their reluctant female guests-not even during one of the coldest winters on record. Comes the spring thaw, the angry townsfolk come charging up the mountain, demanding the return of the stolen girls (who, by this time, have 'tamed' their men). A happy ending is ultimately had by all in this delightful if politically incorrect concoction. Hal Erickson, Rovi. It's great to watch this after so many years, this film is a remindeer to me that my obsession for films started very young and I would watch the same three scenes in this film every day as a kid.
A musical with a love theme, yet perhaps not in it's traditional sense. The film does look dated now but still highly successful as a stage show. Some great songs (and a few less enjoyable ones too), along with some fun rivalry. An early performance from Russ Tamblin, but most noteable performances for this film of course, were Howard Keel and Jane Powell. ½ People often think of the 1950s as just a repressed and conservative time in America, overlooking the fact that people were also quite odd and strange back then (watch a few episodes of the old Superman television series if you want further proof). Film-wise, the fifties were the heyday of both the western and the musical, so it's no surpise when someone decided to combine the two.
Okay, so Seven Brides for Seven Brothers isn't your typical western, but even though there's no gunfighting in the streets, it embodies the western spirit of the old west pioneers. The fun and frolic begins when a bunch of farmer brothers decides to take themselves some wife-womenfolk type thinga-mabobs.
With the help of eldest brother Adam's good young wife, the other brothers learn a little about manners and how to woo the ladies without offering them chaws of tobaccey. The music may not be all that memorable, but the great performances make up for that.
It's alot of corny fun from the oddball fifties.

Plot In 1850, backwoodsman Adam Pontipee comes into town in the in search of a bride. He comes upon the local tavern, where he meets Milly. Convinced of her worth by the quality of her cooking and her insistence on finishing her chores before she would leave with him, he proposes and she accepts despite knowing each other for only a few hours. On the journey home, Milly talks about how she is excited to be cooking and taking care of only one man, visibly upsetting Adam. When they arrive at his cabin in the mountains, Milly is surprised to learn that Adam is one of seven brothers living under the same roof.
The brothers have been named alphabetically from the in order of birth: Adam, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank (short for frankincense, the Old Testament having no names beginning with F), and Gideon. All of the brothers have red hair, and all but Gideon are well over six feet tall. Understandably upset about having to tend to the needs of not one but seven men, and with an idea to solve the situation, a smart and reasonable Milly decides to marry Adam's brothers off to some girls from the town. Milly teaches Adam's rowdy, ill-behaved younger brothers manners and social mores. She also shows them how to dance. At first, the brothers have a hard time changing from their 'mountain man' ways, but eventually come to see their only chance to get brides of their own is to do things Milly's way. They try out their new manners at a social gathering in the town (a dance and barn-raising), where they meet six women they like – Dorcas, Ruth, Martha, Liza, Sarah, and Alice.
The girls take a fancy to the brothers as well. However, they already have suitors among the young men of the town, who taunt the brothers into fighting during the barn-raising. At first the six brothers remember Milly's teaching and try to resist being drawn into a fight. The suitors finally go too far when they attack Adam, provoking Gideon into fighting back. A brawl ensues in which the brothers dominate their physically weaker townie rivals.
Although the Pontipees did not start the fight, they are banished from the town after wrecking the barn they were raising. Winter finds the six younger brothers pining for the girls for whom they had fallen fast and hard.
Milly asks Adam to talk to the brothers as she fears they will want to leave because of missing 'their' girls. Adam reads his brothers the story of 'The Sobbin' Women' (taken from 's story of ), one of the books Milly brought to the homestead.
Seven Brides For Seven Brothers Songs
He tells them that they should take whatever action is necessary to get their women. Aided by Adam, the brothers kidnap the six girls, then cause an avalanche in Echo Pass so the townspeople cannot pursue them. The Pontipee homestead is cut off from the town until the spring thaw opens Echo Pass again. The only problem: The brothers forgot to bring the parson along to perform the marriages. Milly is furious with Adam, as are the six kidnapped women.
Milly exiles the brothers to the barn 'with the rest of the livestock,' while the women live in the house in the brothers' communal bedroom. Adam, angered by Milly's action, leaves for the trapping cabin farther up the mountain to spend the winter by himself. Soon after, Milly realizes that she is pregnant. The interminable winter slowly passes. The girls vent their frustration by playing pranks on the brothers. By spring, the women have forgiven their kidnapping and fallen in love with the brothers, whom they allow to court them.
Milly gives birth to a daughter, Hannah. Gideon rides to the cabin to inform Adam of his daughter's arrival and asks him to come home. Adam refuses, saying that he had said he would return home when the pass was open. Adam returns home in the spring just as Echo Pass opens and reconciles with Milly. As a newly responsible father, he has become aware of how worried the townspeople would be about what has happened to the six abducted girls.
Adam realizes he was wrong to tell his brothers to kidnap them. He tells his brothers they need to take the women back to their homes in town, but his brothers are unwilling. The six women also do not want to return to their homes; they all want to stay at the farm with their suitors, and hide so they will not be taken back home. When Milly discovers that they are not in the house, Adam tells his brothers to go after the girls and bring them back.
The townspeople arrive with the intention of lynching the Pontipee brothers for the kidnappings. Upon finding the brothers trying to force the women to return to town, the fathers believe their daughters are being assaulted and charge to their rescue. Alice's father, Reverend Alcott , the minister the brothers had forgotten to grab when they took the girls, hears baby Hannah cry in the distance, and worries that the baby might belong to one of the kidnapped girls.
Reverend Alcott asks the girls whose baby he had heard. They decide simultaneously to claim the baby as their own.
This misinformation gives the women and the brothers their wish: The townspeople, including the girls' fathers, insist that all six couples marry at once in a, performed by the parson while Adam and Milly watch and the fathers stand behind their daughters' grooms, guns over their arms. The picture ends with the brothers kissing their brides in the living room of the Pontipee cabin.

Lyricist Johnny Mercer said that the musical numbers were written at Kidd's behest, as an example 'of how a songwriter sometimes has to take his cue from his collaborators.'
For example, Kidd explained to Mercer and dePaul his conception of the 'Lonesome Polecat' number, the lament of the brothers for the women, and the two worked out the music and lyrics. In his introduction to a showing on Turner Classic Movies on January 17, 2009, host, as well as in her autobiography, The Girl Next Door, both say MGM was much less interested in Seven Brides than it was in which was also filming at the time, even cutting its budget and transferring the money to the vehicle. It was here that the escape following the brothers' kidnapping their future brides and the avalanche that closed the pass was filmed. Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) SYNOPSIS The rugged Pontipee brothers are living a life of self-sufficiency in the Oregon mountains during the 1850s. When the eldest brother, Adam, brings home his pretty new wife from town, Milly, the brothers decide that they too should find brides.
First, however, Milly must teach the well-meaning but ignorant brothers how to behave so that they can successfully woo the women of their choice. Director: Stanley Donen Producer: Jack Cummings Screenplay: Albert Hackett, Frances Goodrich, Dorothy Kingsley Cinematography: George Folsey Editing: Ralph E.
When their older brother marries, six lumberjacks decide it's time to go courting for themselves. In the Oregon territory in 1850, farmer Adam Pontipee comes into town to trade and announces to the shopkeepers that he is in the market for a wife to keep house for him and his six younger brothers. He quickly becomes enamored of Milly, a pretty, hard-working young woman who cooks for the local boardinghouse. Explaining that the responsibilities of running a farm do not allow for a lengthy courtship, Adam proposes to Milly, and they are married right away. As they ride back to the farm, Milly rejoices that she will now have only one man to take care of, and Adam does not have the heart to spoil her illusion. When they reach the farm, Milly is stunned at the sight of all the rough-and-tumble Pontipee brothers, but she promptly sets about putting their back-woods home in order. That night, however, the brothers' appalling table manners infuriate Milly, and she reproachfully tells Adam that he wanted a servant, not a wife.
Milly banishes Adam from the bedroom, then relents, confessing that she loved him at first sight. The following morning, Milly begins the task of civilizing the brothers, forcing them to submit to underwear-laundering and a shave before giving them breakfast.
She also instructs them in the etiquette of courting women, and after a month, they all attend a barn-raising dance. Despite the brothers' efforts to be on their best behavior, they are drawn into a brawl by the men from town. Later, Milly overhears as the youngest brother, Gideon, tells Adam he fears the townspeople will never let the brothers court their women now. Winter comes, and the brothers find themselves lonesome and pining for female companionship. When brother Benjamin announces his intention to leave the farm, Milly tells Adam that the brothers are grieving for the women they met at the dance. Determined to keep his family together, Adam, who has been reading a copy of Plutarch's Lives given to Milly by her late father, hatches a plan.
Gathering his brothers in the barn, Adam tells them they should follow the example of the ancient Romans with the Sabine women by carrying off their future brides. The Pontipee men go into town and abduct the women of their dreams, then ride off with the townspeople in pursuit. After getting through a treacherous mountain pass, the brothers fire their guns, causing an avalanche that prevents the townspeople from following them. Milly is shocked when the brothers show up with their captives, and sends all the men to live in the barn. Stung by Milly's harsh words, Adam goes to spend the rest of the winter in his trapping cabin in the mountains.
The snowbound women soon begin to moon over the brothers, and when Milly announces she is going to have a baby, they all long to be married. Spring finally arrives, and the brothers and their girl friends happily pursue romance. Milly gives birth to a daughter, but when Gideon rides to the trapping cabin with the news, Adam stubbornly refuses to come home. Adam returns when the pass reopens, however, fearing an attack by the townspeople. After greeting his daughter Hannah and making up with Milly, Adam announces that the women will be returned to their families at once. The brothers oppose this plan, and while the men are sorting it out, the women run away. The brothers set about recapturing the women, who struggle fiercely as they now wish to stay.
The women's kinfolk from town arrive in time to witness the fracas, and the brothers are quickly overpowered. Just as the townspeople are about to hang the brothers, Hannah's cries are heard from inside the house. Reverend Elcott inquires about the baby and, in a moment of inspiration, the women simultaneously claim to be the mother. A shotgun wedding is performed at once, and all the happy couples kiss.
